Founded in 2004, BetOnline.ag is one of the premier US-facing online sportsbooks, casinos, and poker rooms. The site operates a Panama license, which is far from the most reputable available. However, BetOnline has been in the game for over a decade without attracting too much negative attention from players on third-party sites.
One example of BetOnline’s attractions is their range of banking options, which includes bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in addition to the standard e-wallets and debit cards. They also cover an extensive variety of sports, including all the major leagues, such as the NBA and NFL, and a few more niche games, like e-sports and lacrosse.
On the downside, the Panamanian license does not offer much help to customers in the event of a dispute. Some sections of the website and casino also look quite dated, and the live casino offering is below par.
License and legal status
BetOnline operates out of Costa Rica and holds a Panama Gaming Authority license. The site accepts US players, although the legality of this is questionable.
Depending on the financial institution or deposit method you use, you may experience trouble with your bank when depositing at BetOnline. If you live in a regulated gambling state such as New Jersey, you are better off using a sportsbook or online casino in your jurisdiction.
We believe that playing at BetOnline is safe. The company takes all the responsibility for operating outside of US law when accepting you as a customer. This is only our non-legal, professional opinion, and we would advise you to seek qualified legal advice if you are concerned about playing at online gambling sites not covered by US legislation; otherwise, it’s better if you avoid them entirely.
BetOnline Casino Review
The casino section is entirely powered by BetSoft. You won’t find the standard NetEnt, Playtech, or Microgaming slots here. The collection covers around 150 games, including:
- 90+ slots
- Ten video poker titles
- 40 tables games
The table games include roulette, blackjack, table poker, and the US favorite – craps. This collection also features a scattering of lesser-seen variants of these casino classics, such as red-dog, three-card rummy, pontoon, and Spanish blackjack.
The available slot games come in various themes – from the gangster stylings of The Slotfather to the more traditional Jackpot Jamba or the intergalactic adventure of Out of This World. Unfortunately, progressive jackpot slots are conspicuously absent from BetOnline’s slot selection. Most of the slots here are of the five-reel variety, although many can be played in hundreds of ways.
For players looking to maximize their returns, the highest Return-to-Player (or RTP) games offered by BetOnline Casino are Single Deck Blackjack (99.62%) and French Roulette (98.65% on even money bets).
Since BetOnline does not disclose whether their software is audited by a third-party, we had no way of independently verifying any of the RTPs for their slots titles, so we did not include them in this review.
BetOnline Live casino games
BetOnline’s live casino is powered by Visionary iGaming (VIG) out of their studio in Costa Rica. This selection consists of the following 14 tables:
- Ten Blackjack tables
- Two roulette wheels
- Two Baccarat tables
One of the blackjack tables and all roulette and baccarat games come with three-table limit options. The blackjack tables look great and stream smoothly, although they take a while to load even on a strong connection. The roulette tables, however, are a mess when it comes to user experience. The live stream itself, which is usually the most important aspect of a live casino title, is relegated to a small section of the screen, and the interface is highly dated. Lastly, if it makes any difference to you, we noticed that VIG’s female live dealers tend to be more provocatively dressed than those working with most other providers.
The welcome bonus for BetOnline Casino players is not overly advertised, but it can be found in the promotions page.
The offer grants you a 100% deposit match on your first three deposits with a minimum of $25 and a maximum of $1,000. This means you can grab yourself up to $3,000 of total bonus money.
These bonus funds come with a 40x wagering requirement that must be completed within 40 days. To claim the offer, input the code BOLCASINO when making your first deposit.
BetOnline also offers a cryptocurrency special welcome bonus. For first-time depositors using Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, DASH, or Litecoin, the casino matches 50% of the deposit’s dollar value up to $500. There is a 14x playthrough requirement associated with the bonus funds. This offer is also only available for Canadian and US players.
There is no VIP program for casino players at BetOnline.ag.
BetOnline Sportsbook Review
Market and odds
BetOnline offers a comprehensive sportsbook with an extensive range of sports that includes e-sports and lacrosse in addition to all the usual sports, such as football and soccer. The site also provides a futures market, as well as an entertainment market where you can bet on the results of events such as the Emmy Awards or which character will die first in the next series of Game of Thrones.
BetOnline offers relatively high limits on many games and requires a $1 minimum bet on all titles. The sportsbook also features a 10% rebate program for sports bettors who end the month on a net loss.
BetOnline offers a 50% deposit match up to $2,000, which means you can receive a maximum bonus of $1,000. This bonus money carries a 15x wagering requirement and must be completed within 30 days. A minimum deposit of $25 is required to activate the offer, and no withdrawals can be made within 30 days of claiming the promotion.
BetOnline also offers $25 bonus rebate exclusively on horse racing. Simply bet $25 on any horse race, and if it loses, the company will refund your account with $25 in bonus money. This money comes with a 6x playthrough condition, and to claim it, you must email BetOnline support within 24 hours of your lost bet.
BetOnline does not offer a VIP program beyond their refer-a-friend promotion.
BetOnline Poker Room Review
BetOnline initially claimed that their poker room was run independently when it launched in 2011. Considering the vast majority of US-facing poker rooms operate as part of a network, this was interesting. However, it came to light that same year that the BetOnline poker room was, in fact, part a network called Action Poker.
Action Poker had a bad rep among poker fans, so it’s no wonder BetOnline wanted to keep this quiet. However, being dishonest with potential customers at such an early stage does not set the company’s stall out on a good note.
In 2013, Action Poker was bought out by Equity Poker Network, and as far as we know, they remain part of BetOnline’s network to this day.
Although BetOnline’s poker rooms look dated, they are functional. They average about 300 players during peak hours, which isn’t terrible but puts them at the lower end of the market. However, because this is a primarily gambling site, you can expect to catch a lot of fish here. Many users tend to migrate from the main site to give poker a go, and confident players may be able to take advantage of that fact.
You will only find Pot-Limit and No-Limit Hold ‘em tables at BetOnline Poker. Other games, such as Stud and Omaha poker, are conspicuously absent. Table buy-ins range from as little as $0.01 all the way up to $50. There is always some tournament action going on at BetOnline, but their selection pales in comparison to bigger sites such as Ignition or PokerStars. Sit ‘n’ Go tables can reach the $500 mark, although they understandably take longer to fill up, especially during off-peak hours.
BetOnline runs hourly free-roll tournaments as well as $50k contests on Sundays. Prize pools on weekends run up to $250k split across dozens of tournaments.
BetOnline’s poker welcome bonus is tied into their VIP comp points program. Your first deposit is matched 100% up to $1,000. However, this doesn’t happen automatically, and you don’t receive the bonus money all at once. Instead, you need to email support after making your deposit. The bonus money is then released in $10 increments each time you earn 5,000 comp points. Since points are earned at a rate of 1 per $0.01 you pay in rake fees, this works out at $10 of bonus cash for every $50 taken by the rake. See below for further details on the comp points program.
All bonus funds for use in poker must be used within a 30-day period before they expire and are deemed void. This applies to all of BetOnline’s poker promotions.
Details on BetOnline’s poker VIP program are scarce; we had to delve deep into the terms and conditions (T&Cs) to find them. Even then, we only located one short paragraph of information. The two rules are simple:
- One comp point is earned for every $0.01 paid in tournament fees.
- One comp point is earned for every $1 you give to the rake.
The rakes themselves, however, vary a lot depending on the game type and number of players. Firstly, BetOnline does not take a rake before the flop. Next:
- Fixed-limit games take $0.01 for every $0.20 in the pot.
- The rake scales up with each extra player, up to $3 in a five-player game.
- No-limit tables take $0.01 per $0.18 in the pot.
- Less than $1-stake games carry a $3 maximum rake at five players and a $1 minimum.
- $20 and above no-limit games come with a $5 maximum rake.
BetOnline’s platform works smoothly on almost all desktop and mobile browsers, although you need Flash to run the majority of casino games as well as the poker rooms.
You can run the games or sportsbook in your browser or using a downloadable desktop client. You can also supposedly play poker in your computer browser, but in our experience, the games refused to work until we downloaded the dedicated poker client.
The poker room works fine on mobile. However, as with the desktop client, the tables do not look great, and there is no dedicated BetOnline app available for Android or iOS users.
BetOnline deposits & withdrawals
BetOnline claims to offer the largest selection of banking options at any US-facing online sportsbook or casino. Currently, this stands at 12 different methods, which are listed below with their minimum and maximum deposits:
- Skrill (Minimum: $50 Maximum: Unlimited)
- Neteller ($50 – Unlimited)
- Person-to-Person ($50 – $900)
- Bitcoin ($20 – $3500)
- Ethereum ($20 – $25,000)
- Book-to-Book ($500 – Unlimited)
- JCB ($50 – $1,000)
- Visa ($50 – $5,000)
- MasterCard ($50 – $5,000)
- Bank wire transfer ($1,000 – Unlimited)
- Check ($1,500 – $15,000)
This is a solid selection, and it’s certainly more extensive than those offered by most other US-facing casinos. The variety of methods that allow unlimited deposits is also great news for high-rollers; however, the minimum deposits are relatively high for everyone else. The option to use Bitcoin or Ethereum to deposit is another attraction for some, although cryptocurrency can’t be used to gamble and is converted to dollars upon entering the player’s balance.
There is, however, one big downside to BetOnline’s banking system – over half of their withdrawal methods come with a processing fee, and some of them are expensive. Withdrawal fees are scaled to the size of each transaction, with a minimum and maximum fee.
Below is the shorter list of withdrawal methods available at BetOnline along with the minimum and maximum amount per withdrawal as well as any additional charges:
- Person-to-Person (Minimum: $50 – Maximum: $500) (Fee: $26 – $101)
- Bank Wire ($500 – $24,900) (Free)
- Check ($500 – $2,500) ($50-$75)
- ATM Only Card ($100 – $2,500) ($80 card delivery, then $25 per transaction)
- Bitcoin ($25 – $9,900) (2% of the transaction)
- Skrill ($25 – $9,900) (Free)
- Neteller ($25 – $9,900) (Free)
- Book-to-Book ($500 – $15,000) (Fees apply)
Note that Skrill is unavailable to Canadian customers, and you can deduct up to $50 of withdrawal fees once every 30 days but only on Fridays. Specify that you are using this deduction when requesting a withdrawal to have it applied.
Although this offsets the fees to an extent, BetOnline does not heavily advertise this feature, and no online casino in 2018 should be charging $50 for sending a check in the first place.
Last but not least, the processing times for withdrawals are as follows:
- Person-to-Person: 5 days
- Bank wire: 5-15 days
- Check: Delivery in 7 days
- ATM-only card: 3-5 days for delivery, then instant.
- Bitcoin: 24 hours
- Skrill: 36 hours
- Neteller: 36 hours
- Book-to-Book: Maximum of 24 hours.
Overall, BetOnline offers an impressive array of deposit options, many of which are unlimited. However, they are relatively slow to process withdrawals, and they charge almost unforgivable fees on many methods.
